Financial Support

The School of Biomedical Sciences typically does not support Master students on graduate assistantships. The school offers 12-month graduate assistantships on a competitive basis to qualified PhD students. Assistantship recipients receive full financial support in the form of an annual stipend of $26,780 in our doctoral programs along with full tuition waivers and subsidized health insurance. Awards may be renewed annually for up to five years, if the student remains in good academic standing and makes satisfactory progress towards degree completion. A graduate assistantship can be in the form of teaching (Teaching Assistant; approximately 20 hrs/week) or research (Research Assistant). Typically, students start on a teaching assistantship during their first year while rotating in research laboratories.

All PhD applicants who apply without an external fellowship (e.g., Fulbright Scholarship or fellowship from a foreign government) are considered for a graduate assistantship, no separate application is necessary. Admission and funding decisions are made concurrently.

Cost of Living

The cost of living is relatively low in Kent and in the Rootstown area, where the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy are located. The cost of living is slightly more in Cleveland, where the Lerner Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic is, but still quite reasonable compared to many urban areas.
