12th Annual Bra Recycling Drive

¶¶MÅ®ÆÍ’s Office of Sustainability, the Women’s Center, and Human Resources Employee Wellness and Health Promotion are hosting a bra recycling drive from Sept. 30 through Nov. 1, to collect reusable or worn-out bras and reduce the number of textiles in landfills. Bras that are in good condition will be donated to the Phyllis Zumkehr County Clothing Center, and worn-out bras will be recycled.

Thursday, Oct 17 from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. (Centennial Green, part of FAB FallFest). ¶¶MÅ®ÆÍ has partnered with Haymaker Farmers' Market to bring a farmer's market to the Kent Campus. The ¶¶MÅ®ÆÍ Farmers' Market provides students with opportunities to learn about the local farming community, select fresh produce and connect with the broader Kent community in addition to creating a community around food with a warm, friendly and fun environment. Hosted by ¶¶MÅ®ÆÍ of Well-being.

ESDRI Sustainability Forum: Biodesign October 22

Join us for a forum discussion with three leading experts in Biodesign from different arenas. Daniel Grushkin, TômTex Inc. and founder of Biodesign Challenge; Elda Hegmann, Ph.D., ¶¶MÅ®ÆÍ; and Britta Bielak, NCIDQ, ¶¶MÅ®ÆÍ, will speak on their pathway to this field and join in a conversation moderated by Sarah Eichler, Ph.D., ¶¶MÅ®ÆÍ.

Biodesign combines design approaches with knowledge and tools of biological systems, leading to cross-disciplinary research. We’ll be exploring perspectives on biodesign from biotechnology to liquid crystals to architectural design.

Proceeds from the event will support students and programs in the Environmental Science and Design Research Institute (ESDRI) and its undergraduate fellows program.

Green Event: We are working to limit the amount of waste generated at this event as much as possible. These initiatives include encouraging participants to bring their own water bottles, using reusable dishes, cutlery, and cloth napkins, limiting food waste by the amount served and supplying take away containers for any leftover food at the end of the event.

Are you feeling stressed out from all the recent adjustments you’ve had to make this semester? Is news about the coronavirus pandemic leaving you anxious?

¶¶MÅ®ÆÍ of Well-being, ¶¶MÅ®ÆÍ’s healthy campus initiative, is hosting free facilitated online meditation sessions. Meditation sessions last 30 minutes and are open to all members of the ¶¶MÅ®ÆÍ community. There is no obligation to attend. You can choose when you decide to participate.

AASHE Global Conference on Sustainability

This is the premiere event for sustainability in higher education. AASHE welcomes faculty, staff, students, and all types of change agents to gather for compelling presentations and discussions on accelerating sustainability in higher education. This conference is your opportunity to collaborate with colleagues who understand the intricacies of the challenges you face in advancing sustainability at your institution. 

Project Green Challenge

Starting on October 1, Project Green Challenge will inform, inspire and mobilize high school, college, and grad students worldwide around climate action, public health, sustainability, social justice and advocacy. This powerful and diverse call to action features 30 days of environmentally–themed challenges to touch lives, shift mindsets, and equip students with knowledge, resources and mentorship to lead change on campuses and in communities.

Through conscious living, informed consumption, and individual and collective action, Project Green Challenge (PGC) participants are challenged to envision and work toward the healthy, just, resilient future they want to thrive in.

Each day during the month of October, a uniquely themed challenge will be delivered to registered participants by email at 6 am Pacific Time. Each challenge will be live for 24 hours, inviting students to complete actions, upload deliverables, acquire points and heal the planet. Deliverables include photos, videos, creative artwork and written content uploaded to the PGC site and across Turning Green social platforms. Thoughtfully curated, theme-related prize packages will be awarded daily for outstanding submissions.

October 2, 2024, is Energy Efficiency Day, but efficiency is year-round. One Energy Efficiency Day, a growing network of advocates, companies, government agencies, utilities and others will showcase the benefits of energy efficiency.
